The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Star Wars The Force Awakens has broken advanced ticket sales records. Not only that but Disney expects it to be their top grossing movie of all time. While most movies are lucky now-a-days to break $50 million at the box office. The Force Awakens has broken that already and hasn't even screened for audiences yet. By the time it releases on December 17th records held by movies such as The Hobbit or Jurassic World will be merely a blip on the radar.
Whether or not Star Wars can break the record of $2.79 billion world wide will remain to be seen. Most of it depends on other markets like China and Russia where the franchise isn't the pop culture phenom it is here in the States.
To accommodate demand, some theaters have even gone to extreme hours such as 2 or 5am. The studios are requiring that theaters play The Force Awakens in their biggest auditoriums and played for a minimum of four weeks. Also because of security reasons many theaters are no longer allowing access to the movies to anyone dressed as their favorite Star Wars characters, which typically the midnight showings are well known for their die hard fans dressed in cosplay.
