OLDBOY
Director: Chan-wook Park
Writers: Garon Tsuchiya, Nobuaki Minegishi
Stars: Min-Sik Choi, Ji-Tae Yu, Hye-jeong Kang
Synopsis: An average man is kidnapped and imprisoned in a shabby cell for 15 years
without explanation. He then is released, equipped with money, a
cellphone and expensive clothes. As he strives to explain his
imprisonment and get his revenge, Oh Dae-Su soon finds out that his
kidnapper has a greater plan for him and is set onto a path of pain and
suffering in an attempt to uncover the motive of his mysterious
tormentor.
Why We Suggest It: Oldboy
is one of the first Chan-wook Park films to receive a cult-following by
the American audience. Although the film was remade by Hollywood
studios in 2013 (Staring Josh Brolin), the original stands much more
true to the story in atmosphere. Having one of the biggest plot twists,
as well as one of the longest single-shot fight scenes I've ever seen--
Oldboy ranks in my top 3 revenge flicks of all time.
