Netflix Nugget - Week of February 29th

OLDBOY
Director: Chan-wook Park
Writers: Garon Tsuchiya, Nobuaki Minegishi
Stars: Min-Sik Choi, Ji-Tae Yu, Hye-jeong Kang

Synopsis:  An average man is kidnapped and imprisoned in a shabby cell for 15 years without explanation. He then is released, equipped with money, a cellphone and expensive clothes. As he strives to explain his imprisonment and get his revenge, Oh Dae-Su soon finds out that his kidnapper has a greater plan for him and is set onto a path of pain and suffering in an attempt to uncover the motive of his mysterious tormentor.

Why We Suggest It:  Oldboy is one of the first Chan-wook Park films to receive a cult-following by the American audience. Although the film was remade by Hollywood studios in 2013 (Staring Josh Brolin), the original stands much more true to the story in atmosphere. Having one of the biggest plot twists, as well as one of the longest single-shot fight scenes I've ever seen-- Oldboy ranks in my top 3 revenge flicks of all time.

Netflix Nugget - Week of February 22nd

THE HOUSE AT THE END OF TIME
Director: Alejandro Hidalgo
Writers: Alejandro Hidalgo
Stars: Rosmel Bustamante, Adriana Calzadilla, Simona Chrinos
IMDB.com Page

Synopsis:  Dulce is a mother of two who suddenly experiences encounters with mysterious apparitions in her old house, a place where a terrible prophecy is about to be unleashed. Thirty years later, an elderly Dulce returns home to try and decipher the mystery and the tragedy that have tormented her for so long.

Why We Suggest It: This is one of those movies that will stay with you for a while after you're done watching it.  It's a very unique take on the typical haunted house/ghost story.  While the story is a very slow burn it has a fantastic payoff in the end.  I cannot give away too many details as it would certainly spoil your experience.  If you're looking for a good ghost story that will bring something new to the table, give this one a shot!

Deadpool Review

Written by: Andy Scott

108 min  |  Action, Adventure, Comedy
Release Date: February 12th, 2016
Director: Tim Miller
Starring: Ryan Reynolds, Morena Baccarin, Ed Skrein, T.J. Miller

I had the pleasure of checking out a screening of Deadpool over Valetine's Day weekend with an old budddy of mine while my wife and her sister worked on wedding decorations.  I was more than happy to get out of the house.  While I have introduced my wife to superhero movies and she loves the Avengers, this would not have been a movie she would have enjoyed.  And that's just fine with me.  She isn't a huge fan of extreme violence, crude humor or adult language.  Well that describes the character of Deadpool to a tee and the movie actually delivers what it claimed it would: an R-rated no holds barred all out violent dark humor fourth wall breaking Deadpool flick!

Netflix Nugget - Week of February 15th

WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT KEVIN
Directors: Lynne Ramsay
Writers: Lynne Ramsay
Stars: Tilda Swinton, John C. Reilly, Ezra Miller
IMDB.com Page

Synopsis:  Eva Khatchadourian is trying to piece together her life following the "incident". Once a successful travel writer, she is forced to take whatever job comes her way, which of late is as a clerk in a travel agency. She lives a solitary life as people who know about her situation openly shun her, even to the point of violent actions toward her. She, in turn, fosters that solitary life because of the incident, the aftermath of which has turned her into a meek and scared woman. That incident involved her son Kevin Khatchadourian, who is now approaching his eighteenth birthday. Eva and Kevin have always had a troubled relationship, even when he was an infant. Whatever troubles he saw, Franklin, Eva's complacent husband, just attributed it to Kevin being a typical boy. The incident may be seen by both Kevin and Eva as his ultimate act in defiance against his mother.

Why We Suggest It:  This movie stuck with me as I believe it will with most of its viewers.  The ever looming threat of violence and unstable disturbing nature of their son, Kevin.  This movie brings into question whether Kevin's actions result from him being a bad son or Eva being a bad mother.  Nature vs Nurture in a way that will make you often second guess your own opinion between the two. Between the sound and camera work this is one that I'm sure will keep you thinking about it for days.

Netflix Nugget - Week of February 1st

TURBO KID
Directors: Francios Smiard, Anouk Whissel
Writers: Francios Smiard, Anouk Whissel
Stars: Munro Chambers, Laurence Lebouef, Michael Ironside
IMDB.com Page

Synopsis:  In a post-apocalyptic future, THE KID, a young solitary scavenger obsessed with comic books must face his fears and become a reluctant hero when he meets a mysterious girl named APPLE. Despite their efforts to keep to themselves, ZEUS, the sadistic and self-proclaimed leader of the Wasteland, plagues THE KID and APPLE. Armed with little more than blind faith and an ancient turbocharged weapon, THE KID learns of justice and friendship and embarks on an incredible journey to rid the Wasteland of evil and save the girl of his dreams.

Why We Suggest It: Winner of SXSW Film Festival, Turbo Kid is the story of justice and friendship in a world similar to Mad Max, but on bicycles. The soundtrack alone is enough to make you start craving the old-school Sega games. Don't be surprised at the over-the-top gore scenes and character absurdities that make this movie rank high on the retro-scale; I didn't say Mad Max for the hell of it..
